In this blog post, we'll explore a range of unconventional self-care activities that will leave you feeling recharged, inspired, and ready to take on the world. Get ready to transform your self-care game with these energizing activities you never knew you needed!

1. Laughter Yoga

Have you seen Laughter Yoga before? I see it popping up more and more in the self=care world, and I'm loving what I'm seeing. Laughter Yoga combines deep breathing exercises with contagious laughter, resulting in a holistic approach to boosting your mood and reducing stress levels. Laughter Yoga will teach you how let go of all inhibitions, and your inner child has a chance to come out and play. Laughter can reduce stress, depression and anxiety. Combining it with yoga gives you a healing body and mind experience.

2. Forest Bathing

Step into nature and immerse yourself in the healing power of the great outdoors with forest bathing. This Japanese practice, known as shinrin-yoku, involves mindfully connecting with nature through all your senses, allowing you to tap into the calming energy of the forest. What do you hear? What do you smell? What does the ground feel like under your feet or how does the wind taste?

Feel the stress melt away as you breathe in the fresh forest air and embrace the tranquility of your surroundings. Being in the woods reduces cortisol and adrenaline, it can lower blood pressure, and it improves creativity. To forest bath, all you need is a forest! Disconnect from your phone (but maybe still keep it on your for safety depending on where you are) and mindfully walk and sit in the woods. There are also guided experiences that include 2, 3 or 4 hour meditative excursions. Wisconsin has so many gorgeous forests to explore, so get out there!

3. Sound Bath Therapy

Dive into a world of sound healing with sound bath therapy, where you'll be enveloped in a symphony of soothing sound vibrations. Close your eyes, relax, and let the harmonious sounds of singing bowls and gongs wash over you, promoting deep relaxation and inner peace. Experience a truly transformative self-care journey through the power of sound. Researchers have found that tension, anxiety, and negative moods decreased significantly after sound bath therapy. In-person is best, but even listening to recordings through headphones can help reduce anxiety.

4. Art Journaling

I grew up drawing and writing, but I never thought of putting them together while journaling. Art Journaling lets you express your creativity and emotions as a therapeutic way to channel your feelings and thoughts onto paper. Combine words, images, and colors to create a visual diary that serves as a personal outlet for self-reflection and healing. Grab those stickers you've been saving, a set of markers, maybe even some glitter and get to writing.

5. Floatation Therapy

This is on my bucket list! I want to experience weightlessness and sensory deprivation in a floatation tank, where I can unwind and disconnect from the outside world. Floatation therapy offers a unique opportunity to relax both body and mind, providing a tranquil space for deep introspection and mental clarity. On top of the relaxation, I feel like the relief I'd get from my chronic pain would be magical. Because you're closed off from the outside world in a floatation tank, you're just left to reconnect with yourself with 0 distractions. As someone easily distracted during most self-care activities, this seems like a win to me.

6. Dance Meditation

Combine the joy of movement with the peace of meditation through dance meditation. Let the rhythm guide your body as you express yourself freely and release any tension or stress through dance. Engage in a mindful movement practice that nourishes your soul and rejuvenates your spirit, all while grooving to your favorite tunes. I recently tried a version of somatic therapy with a group of women where we moved our bodies to a song with our eyes closed. I focused on how my body felt as it shaked and jiggled, and even though it was a short experience, I loved what I took away from it. This is something I want to add to my life.

7. Aromatherapy Blending Workshop

Did you know that scents can reduce stress? They signal the limbic system, the part of the brain that controls memory and emotion. When you immerse yourself in the world of scents and create your signature blend in an aromatherapy workshop, you're creating something that can reduce your anxiety or boost your mood. Lavender is popular for stress relief, jasmine can reduce tension, orange boosts energy, chamomile can help with sleep. I often overlook the benefits of scent in terms of self-care, and creating a perfume or oils that help center me is something I want to try.
