How to DIY Your Boudoir Photos

Writer's picture: Alicia SchmittAlicia Schmitt

Boudoir photography is an amazing way to celebrate yourself and embrace your unique beauty. While hiring a professional photographer is an incredible experience that comes with guidance and expertise, I know that sometimes budgets or personal preferences might lead you to try capturing boudoir photos on your own. The good news? With a little creativity, planning, and confidence, you can absolutely create stunning DIY boudoir photos right at home!

Here’s your guide to DIY boudoir photos that look professional and make you feel like a total boss:

1. Set the Mood with Lighting

Lighting is everything when it comes to photography, especially boudoir. Soft, natural light is your best friend here. Try shooting during the golden hours (morning or late afternoon) near a window for that dreamy, diffused light. If natural light isn’t an option, use a soft lamp or ring light to create a moody glow. Avoid harsh overhead lights—they tend to cast unflattering shadows...like Nosferatu vibes, and we don't want that (unless you're into that kind of thing!)

2. Choose a Comfortable, Private Space

Pick a space where you feel comfortable and safe—it could be your bedroom, living room, or even a cozy corner of your home. Clean up the area to keep the focus on you, and add some personal touches like soft blankets, fairy lights, or flowers to enhance the vibe.

3. Pick Outfits (or No Outfit!) That Make You Feel Amazing

The key to boudoir is wearing something that makes you feel confident and sexy. This could be lingerie, a favorite oversized sweater, a silky robe, or even a strategically placed sheet. The goal is to feel good in your skin, so choose outfits (or lack thereof) that reflect your style and comfort level.

4. Use a Tripod and Timer

Unless you have a patient friend or partner to help, a tripod and camera timer will be your best tools. Most smartphones and cameras come with timer features, and there are plenty of affordable tripod options online. Place your camera at different angles and distances to experiment with framing and composition.

Pro tip: Many smartphones have remote shutter options, so you can trigger the camera without having to rush back and forth!

5. Play with Posing

This is your time to shine, so let your personality guide your posing. Start simple: lying on a bed, sitting on a chair, or standing against a wall. Use mirrors to check your angles, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Incorporate props like pillows, sheets, or flowers to add texture and interest. And remember, the best poses are the ones where you feel most confident. Pro Tip: Point those toes and think about triangles! If something can bend, bend it. It adds visual interest and movement. And drop those shoulders!

6. Pay Attention to Details

Little details can make a big difference. Before your shoot, check for anything that might distract from your photos, like stray items in the background. Also, think about your hair, makeup, and nails—whether you go all out or keep it natural, choose a look that makes you feel like your most fabulous self.

7. Edit with Care

Once you’ve captured your images, take some time to edit them. There are plenty of free or affordable apps like Lightroom, Snapseed, or VSCO that allow you to adjust lighting, colors, and minor blemishes. Just don’t overdo it! The goal is to enhance your natural beauty, not to change what makes you, you.

8. Give Yourself Grace

Posing in front of a camera—especially for boudoir photos—can feel vulnerable. Be kind to yourself, and don’t stress about every little detail. Boudoir is about celebrating your unique beauty and power, so focus on having fun and embracing the experience.

While DIY boudoir photos can be a fun and empowering project, nothing quite compares to the experience of working with a professional boudoir photographer. We’re here to help you feel comfortable, guide you through posing, and create jaw-dropping images you’ll treasure forever.
